Your Expert Guide to Car Aircon Electrical Diagnosis

If your AC system is full of gas but the compressor won't start, you have an electrical fault. We diagnose sensors, relays, and control modules to find the root cause.

One of the most frustrating AC problems is when the system is fully gassed, holds pressure perfectly, but the compressor simply refuses to turn on. This is a clear sign of an electrical fault. Modern climate control is not a simple on/off switch; it's a complex network of sensors and modules that all need to communicate correctly.

Common Electrical Failure Points

When we encounter this issue, our auto-electricians follow a systematic diagnostic process, checking for common failure points:

  • Fuses and Relays: The first and simplest check. A blown fuse or a faulty compressor clutch relay can disable the entire system.
  • Pressure Switches/Transducers: These sensors tell the car's computer (ECU) that the gas pressure is safe to operate. If the sensor fails, the ECU will prevent the compressor from engaging to protect it from damage.
  • Compressor Clutch Coil: The clutch is an electromagnet that engages the compressor pulley. If the coil burns out, the clutch will never "click" on.
  • Climate Control Module: The button on your dashboard can fail, or the module itself can have internal faults. We use advanced diagnostic scanners to check for error codes from the Body Control Module (BCM).
  • Wiring Harness: We check for breaks or shorts in the wiring loom, which can be caused by engine vibration, heat, or even rodents.

Instead of just replacing parts, we use multimeters and diagnostic tools to test each component, ensuring we identify and fix the exact point of failure, saving you time and money.
