Winter Car Care: Why You Must Run Your Air Conditioner

It sounds counterintuitive, but running your car's air conditioner during winter is crucial for preventing expensive repairs. Learn the science behind it.

It's a common habit for drivers in Pretoria to switch their car's air conditioner off in May and not touch it again until September. While this seems logical to save fuel, it's one of the most common causes of expensive AC failures we see in our workshop. The principle is simple: use it or lose it.

1. Lubricating the System Seals

Your car's AC system is not a simple set of pipes. It's connected by numerous rubber O-rings and seals. These seals are designed to be in constant contact with the specialized PAG oil that circulates with the refrigerant gas. This oil keeps the rubber soft, pliable, and properly sealed.

When the system is left dormant for months, the oil settles. The seals dry out, become brittle, and shrink. When you finally turn the AC on in the spring, these shrunken seals can no longer hold pressure, and the expensive refrigerant gas leaks out. Suddenly, you're facing a regas and a potential leak repair bill.

2. Preventing Compressor Seizure

The compressor is the heart of your AC system. Like any mechanical pump, it needs regular lubrication to keep its internal parts moving freely. Running the AC circulates oil through the compressor, preventing internal components from seizing up due to lack of use.

3. Removing Humidity and Defogging Windows

Your AC's most underrated feature is its ability to act as a powerful dehumidifier. In cold, damp winter weather, your windscreen can fog up dangerously. Running the AC (even with the heater on) pulls moisture from the air far more effectively than the heater alone, clearing your view in seconds. This is a critical safety feature.

Expert Tip: Once a week, run your air conditioner on its coldest setting with the fan on high for about 10 minutes. This is enough to circulate oil and keep every component in prime condition, saving you a headache in the spring.
